What obligation, if any, do libraries have to preserve local history records? We will explore the functions of public history, comparing how citizens engage with local history resources in academic and public library settings (as opposed to archival). These collections enable scholars and curious laypeople alike to contextualize personal, regional histories in a national context. Using public history, libraries can engage patrons through outreach, genealogy resources, social media, and more.
